RADIO USAGE

1. PURPOSE

1.1 In the interest of the department member’s health and safety, this document is established to provide guidelines maintaining a safe work environment.

2. REFERENCES

2.1 Union Fire District Board of Wardens Policy.

3. SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

3.1 The department shall maintain proper communications in accordance with FCC regulations.

4. PROCEDURE

4.1 All apparatus and portables will be called by their assigned designation and number. (Engine – 1, Portable Engine – 1A) NO STATION ROLL CALL NUMBER.

4.2 All units will sign on the air, RESPONDING (with the number of personnel on board and repeat the address) TO 123 ANY STREET, when responding to an alarm.

4.3 All units will give an ON SCENE when they arrive at the scene. Except for the first unit doing the investigating, all other personnel will remain with their apparatus, unless an assignment has been given to them.

4.4 Units will give an AVAILABLE (returning to station) only if they are leaving the scene before a general CANCEL is given by the officer in charge at the scene. At which time units will not have to give an AVAILABLE. If a CANCEL is given by the officer at the scene before apparatus have arrived, units responding will return, without giving AVAILABLE on the radio. The officer in charge at the scene will give fire out, all units available for remaining units. The last unit returning to the station will sign off IN QUARTERS for all units in that station. ( K from Engine 1 all Station 2 Units back in quarters.) When a PROCEED WITH CAUTION is given, all units are to avoid needless risk in responding and without lights and sirens.

4.5 At working fires, all radio traffic shall be directed through the Command Post.

4.6 At working fires, the order to change radio frequencies to alternate channels will be given by Command. The alternate channel when the duty vehicle is on the fire ground will be Channel 5, otherwise Channel 6.

4.7 All apparatus will sign on the air whenever leaving the station.
