VEHICLE FIRES

1. PURPOSE

1.1 In the interest of the department member’s health and safety, this document is established to provide guidelines maintaining a safe work environment.

2. REFERENCES

2.1 Union Fire District Board of Wardens Policy.

3. OSHA REQUIREMENTS

3.1 The department shall maintain proper safety precautions in accordance with OSHA regulations.

4. PROCEDURE

The first arriving engine shall park at least 75’ from the vehicle and shall be placed, whenever possible, upwind and uphill from the vehicle.

The second arriving engine shall supply water to the first in engine.

The first attack line shall be 1 3⁄4” hand line with a fog type nozzle to allow the use of foam if necessary.

The second attack line (backup) shall be used to cool the fuel tank and provide protection for the crews.

All lines will be deployed from the first in engine unless directed to use another engine/line per the Incident Commander.

All firefighters shall wear SCBA’s and be on air before conducting any fire suppression activities.

All radio communications shall be conducted on channel 5 or 6.
